How to Summarise a YouTube Video — 4-Step Guide

Turn an eligible public YouTube video with an available transcript into a structured reading on Web or iOS. Paste the URL, pick a depth, and use timestamps when available to return to the relevant moment. Here is the workflow.

You need

  • · A compatible browser or iOS device
  • · The Summio Web workspace or iOS app
  • · A supported public YouTube URL
  1. Copy the video URL

Copy the URL for an eligible public YouTube video. Availability depends on a usable transcript and current product limits; unsupported or very long videos may not be accepted.

  2. Open Summio and paste

Open the Summio Web workspace or iOS app, add a YouTube source, and paste the URL. Summio uses available transcript context for supported videos.

  3. Pick a depth

Use short to decide whether to watch the full video, medium for a broader overview, and detailed for more context. Estimated reading time varies, and timestamps appear only when available from the supported source.

  4. Read, chat, jump back

Read the summary. Use an available timestamp to jump back to that moment in the video. Ask the summary and available transcript context: "Where does the speaker explain the architecture?" — then verify the relevant passage in the original.

Tips & gotchas

  • If a playlist URL is not accepted, add an eligible public video individually.
  • Available transcripts can contain errors. Check the original video before quoting or relying on an important detail.
  • Save talks you want to revisit; Summio Companion can create recall and review practice from saved summaries.

Common questions

Is there a maximum video length?

Processing depends on the public video, its available transcript, and current product limits. Very long or unsupported videos may not be accepted.

What if the video has no captions?

A supported, available transcript is required for this flow. Videos without usable transcript context may not be accepted.

Can I summarise a private or unlisted YouTube video?

Use a supported public YouTube URL. Private videos are not supported, and other restricted or transcript-less links may not be accepted.
